Data envelopment analysis of mutual funds based on second-order stochastic dominance

چکیده
Although data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been extensively used to assess the performance of mutual funds (MF), most of the approaches overestimate the risk associated to the endogenous benchmark portfolio. This is because in the conventional DEA technology the risk of the target portfolio is computed as a linear combination of the risk of the assessed MF. This neglects the important effects of portfolio diversification. Other approaches based on mean–variance or mean–variance–skewness are non-linear. We propose to combine DEA with stochastic dominance criteria. Thus, in this paper, six distinct DEA-like linear programming (LP) models are proposed for computing relative efficiency scores consistent (in the sense of necessity) with second-order stochastic dominance (SSD). The aim is that, being SSD efficient, the obtained target portfolio should be an optimal benchmark for any rational risk-averse investor. The proposed models are compared with several related approaches from the literature. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance Measurement and Best-Practice Benchmarking of Mutual Funds: Combining Stochastic Dominance criteria with Data Envelopment Analysis
We propose a method for mutual fund performance measurement and best-practice benchmarking, which endogenously identifies a dominating benchmark portfolio for each evaluated mutual fund. Dominating benchmarks provide information about efficiency improvement potential as well as portfolio strategies for achieving them. Portfolio diversification possibilities are accounts for by using Data Envelo...
متن کاملEfficiency of mutual funds in Croatia: a DEA-based approach applied in the pre-crisis, crisis and post crisis period
The aim of this paper is to estimate the overall performance of mutual funds in Croatia in terms of their relative efficiency based on several performance indicators using data envelopment analysis (DEA). DEA is a non-parametric method that can provide an overall relative efficiency score of a certain fund given a number of risk, cost or reward or profitability measures. Since traditional mutua...
متن کاملMutual Fund Style Analysis: A Stochastic Dominance Approach
It is a well-known fact that actively managed mutual funds on average underperform passive benchmarks. In this paper, we use the stochastic dominance test proposed by Linton, Maasoumi, and Whang (2005) to shed new light on mutual fund performance on average and across styles. This test evaluates mutual fund performance using a non-parametric framework that 1) imposes a minimal set of conditions...
متن کاملStudying the Adjustment Amount of Ranking the Performance of Mutual Funds Based on Omega Ratio and Real Return
One of the main functionalities of capital market is to enhance liquidity in the market. Mutual funds are modern financial institutions which are designed with the aim of absorbing funds from investors and devote them to buy a variety of securities in order to reduce investment risks, exploit the economies of scale and finally make a reasonable return for investors. Regarding effective role of ...
متن کاملElectricity Procurement for Large Consumers with Second Order Stochastic Dominance Constraints
This paper presents a decision making approach for mid-term scheduling of large industrial consumers based on the recently introduced class of Stochastic Dominance (SD)- constrained stochastic programming. In this study, the electricity price in the pool as well as the rate of availability (unavailability) of the generating unit (forced outage rate) is considered as uncertain parameters. Th...
